If you want to keep your personal business to yourself, you should not conduct it at work — especially not on your employer’s equipment. Though it seems obvious to me, Sgt. Jeff Quon, a police officer from Ontario, Calif., had to go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to learn this lesson. Most white-collar employees have telephones on their desks, and most employers, myself included, do not mind if an employee uses the phone occasionally for personal purposes. It would never occur to me to eavesdrop or surreptitiously record those conversations.
